Location:
Shimla , its name means the land covered with snow, extends from the latitudes 30°22'40" North to 33°12'40" North and longitudes 75°45' 55" East to 79°04' 20" East.
Shimla is bordered by Punjab to the west, Uttar Pradesh to the southeast, China to the east, Haryana to the southeast, and Jammu and Kashmir to the North.
Climate:
The climate of Shimla , depending on the altitude, varies at different places from semi tropical to semi arctic. Winters (October to February) are very severe and heavy snowfall is recorded during this season. April to June is delightful and comfortable at the higher altitudes, though on the lower hills, this season can have more humidity than usual. July to September is the time for rainfall and the entire region becomes green and fresh with streams swelling and springs replenished.
How to reach Shimla ?
Shimla , in North India, is accessible by air, rail and road.
Air: The state has three airports at Bhuntar, Gaggal, and Jubbarhatti, which connect the state to Delhi and Chandigarh via regular flights by Indian Airlines. There is no international airport in Shimla . Dalhouse appears to be extremely charming due to the existence of Kathlog, Balun, Porteyn, Moti Tibba and Bakrota hills. Rail: Only few places in Shimla are connected by trains, as the construction of new lines are very difficult in the rugged, high altitude regions. The longest railway line is from Pathankot in Punjab to Jogindernagar in Shimla . Other railway tracks touch Shimla, Solan, and Una.
Road: Despite problems in constructing new roads and maintaining them, most of the important places in the state are connected with a good road network. Some of the roads are closed during the winter and monsoon seasons due to the heavy snowfall and landslides that occur regularly in this region.
